The Government of Ghana has formally filed a protest with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres following an attack on the Ghanaian Battalion serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The incident, which occurred in Southern Lebanon on March 6, 2026, resulted in serious injuries to two Ghanaian soldiers. In a statement issued from Accra on March 7, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa demanded a full, immediate, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the assault, characterizing the act as a grave violation of international law and a war crime.

Ghanaian authorities have called for those responsible to be identified and held accountable, asserting that such actions are an affront to the protections afforded to personnel deployed in the service of international peace.

The government further urged the United Nations to implement all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the Ghanaian contingent and other personnel serving under the mission. While reaffirming its long-standing commitment to global peacekeeping operations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it would continue to monitor developments and remain engaged with UN authorities to pursue justice and enhanced protection for its soldiers.
