ACCRA, GHANA — In a historic bridging of continents and cultures, President John Dramani Mahama joined global leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the African diaspora at Osu’s iconic Christiansborg Castle for a landmark joint commemoration of Juneteenth by Africa and the United States.

The event, heavy with both solemn reflection and forward-looking resolve, marked a profound milestone in the collective remembrance of the transatlantic slave trade and the ongoing global fight for equity.

Honouring Resilience, Demanding Justice

Standing on ground deeply intertwined with the history of the slave trade, President Mahama paid a moving tribute to the millions of Africans who endured enslavement, systemic displacement, and the painful erasure of their identities. He praised the unyielding resilience, courage, and enduring spirit of their descendants worldwide.

The commemoration follows on the heels of the successfully concluded Next Steps High-Level Consultative Conference on Reparatory Justice. President Mahama noted that conference participants successfully adopted a pivotal outcome document designed to guide future international cooperation regarding:

  • Reparatory justice and systemic accountability.
  • Historical remembrance and education.
  • Restitution of stolen heritage.

“The pursuit of justice extends far beyond financial reparations and the return of cultural artefacts,” President Mahama emphasized, calling on global powers to build a more equitable and inclusive international order that guarantees opportunity, dignity, and fairness for all people.

A Global Coalition Gathers

The historic gathering drew an esteemed roster of international dignitaries, underscoring the global weight of the occasion. Among those present were:

  • Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados.
  • Heads of state and government representatives from across Africa and the Caribbean.
  • Prominent traditional authorities and leaders of the global African diaspora.

The Open Door: Strengthening Diaspora Ties

Reaffirming Ghana’s longstanding role as a beacon for the global African family, President Mahama highlighted progressive national policies aimed at welcoming people of African descent back to their ancestral roots. These initiatives include streamlined pathways for legal residence and championed efforts for expanded visa-free travel across the African continent.

Closing his address with a powerful, emotional rallying cry to the diaspora, President Mahama declared:
“Ghana is your home. You are always welcome in the motherland.”
