The Government of Ghana has officially commenced high-level diplomatic negotiations with Ukraine to secure the release of a Ghanaian national currently held as a prisoner of war. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that the Ukrainian government notified Ghanaian authorities of the arrest and provided identification that has since been verified.

Investigations into the individual’s movements reveal that he arrived in Moscow, Russia, on July 7, 2024, where he reportedly signed a contract to join the 2nd Assault Company of the 71st Motorized Rifle Regiment. He was subsequently involved in active hostilities in the Zaporizhzhia region before his capture.

In a move to expedite the process, Minister Ablakwa held a meeting yesterday with the Acting Ambassador of Ukraine to Ghana, Ivan Lukachuk, to formally appeal for the citizen’s release and repatriation.

A special message has also been dispatched to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and the Foreign Minister is scheduled to travel to Ukraine in the coming weeks to continue direct negotiations.

Notably, the Ghanaian government has raised an official objection to its national being included in any prisoner exchange programs between Ukraine and Russia, citing concerns that such a move could increase his vulnerability.

The Ministry expressed optimism that these diplomatic efforts will be successful, citing the cordial relations between the two nations and Ghana’s consistent advocacy for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Parallel to the negotiations, Minister Ablakwa issued a stern warning to the youth of Ghana regarding the dangers of clandestine recruitment and human trafficking networks.

He urged citizens to remain vigilant against criminal organizations operating through the dark web that lure individuals into foreign military service, emphasizing that the Mahama administration remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all Ghanaians abroad.
