ACCRA – The government of Ghana is set to address the significant accommodation challenges facing the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) by rolling out over 2,000 new housing units nationwide, according to Lieutenant General William Agyapong, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS).

Speaking at the GAF’s end-of-year religious parade at Burma Camp on Sunday, December 14, 2025, Lt Gen Agyapong announced that approximately 700 of these new homes will be constructed across five garrisons in Accra to alleviate the current housing deficit. He added that the long-term plan aims to deliver an additional 8,000 housing units over the next five years to ensure personnel have “decent places of abode.”

In addition to the housing initiative, the CDS disclosed that the Armed Forces is scheduled to receive a major retooling package sanctioned by the President. This will include the procurement of:

• Additional air platforms, specifically helicopters and long-haul jets.

• Offshore patrol boats.

• New Armoured Vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers for the Army, accompanied by various accoutrements such as weapons, vehicles, protective gear, defence stores, and ammunition.

Finally, Lt Gen Agyapong addressed the issue of public misinformation, specifically countering claims in some media outlets and blogs that the government provides meagre allowances to Ghanaian troops serving as UN Peacekeepers.

He urged personnel to use their knowledge and discerning nature, assuring them that the viral claims suggesting low payments compared to what the government receives from the UN are “very far from facts.”
