Ghana joined the global community on Monday, March 9, 2026, to mark Commonwealth Day with a formal flag-raising ceremony held at the Forecourt of the State House.

The event, themed “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” focused on the necessity of innovation, solidarity, and deeper collaboration among member states to drive sustainable development and youth empowerment.

The ceremony was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, traditional leaders, and security personnel, and featured a photo exhibition highlighting Ghana’s historical and contemporary engagements within the Commonwealth framework.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to the core values of the Commonwealth, including peace, democracy, and human rights. He underscored the nation’s commitment to multilateralism as a tool for addressing global challenges, specifically identifying digital transformation, climate resilience, and youth development as Ghana’s primary focus areas.

The Minister emphasized that collective action remains the most effective path toward building an inclusive and prosperous global community.

The British High Commissioner, His Excellency Christian Rogg, delivered a statement on behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, His Majesty King Charles III, stressing the shared responsibility of member nations to safeguard the environment and support the next generation.

This sentiment was echoed by Dr. John Obeng Apea, Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council in Ghana, who noted that the Commonwealth is a unique partnership bound by trust rather than geography.

Dr. Apea highlighted the importance of fostering innovative economic partnerships to advance inclusive development across all member states.
