The Government of Ghana has issued a firm diplomatic protest to Canada after immigration authorities in Ottawa refused a temporary residence visa for Black Stars midfielder Thomas Teye Partey, a key member of Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Canada’s decision as “high‑handed and extremely unfair,” arguing that the refusal, based on paragraph A36(1)(c) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, relies on unproven allegations stemming from ongoing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom. Ghana emphasized that Mr. Partey has not been convicted of any crime and remains entitled to the presumption of innocence, a foundational principle of democratic justice systems.

According to the Ministry, the Government of Ghana has already initiated active diplomatic engagements with Canadian authorities. On June 11, an official note of protest was delivered to Global Affairs Canada, urging a reconsideration of what Ghana calls an “unfortunate decision” that undermines fairness and due process.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has also held direct discussions with senior Canadian officials, including High Commissioner Myriam Montrat, stressing the national significance of Mr. Partey’s participation in the World Cup and the broader sporting implications for Ghana and the global football community.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to constructive diplomacy, the rule of law, and human rights, while signaling readiness to pursue all available remedies, including judicial review before the Federal Court of Canada, should diplomatic efforts fail.

Despite the dispute, Ghana underscored its longstanding cordial relations with Canada, expressing hope that the matter will be resolved swiftly in the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.

The statement concluded with a reminder of football’s enduring power to unite nations, promote fair play, and strengthen bonds of friendship, values Ghana insists must guide the handling of this case both on and off the field.
