Ghana and China Celebrate Record $15 Billion Trade Milestone as Outgoing Ambassador Bids Farewell

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has highlighted the deepening economic ties between Ghana and the People’s Republic of China, announcing that bilateral trade between the two nations has reached an unprecedented $15 billion.

This disclosure was made during a farewell meeting in Accra with the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, as he concluded his diplomatic tenure.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended the Ambassador for his instrumental role in securing critical development projects, including a 0-tariff agreement and two significant grants aimed at the construction of the Aflao Market and the Catholic Science and Technology University in Damongo.

During the exchange, the Vice President expressed the Government of Ghana’s gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to President John Dramani Mahama during his recent state visit to China, noting that the trip established a new blueprint for future bilateral engagements. In light of a rapidly changing global landscape, she emphasized the necessity of continuously reviewing and strengthening partnerships to ensure they remain mutually beneficial.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to expanding trade and people-to-people ties, wishing the outgoing envoy success in his future endeavors while signaling Ghana’s readiness to welcome his successor and maintain the robust cooperation that defines the relationship between the two countries.
