The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, held a bilateral meeting with Canada’s Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Dr. Harpreet S. Kochhar, on Tuesday to discuss migration management and strengthened bilateral cooperation. The talks centered on the importance of maintaining safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways between the two nations.
During the session, Hon. Quayson commended the enduring relationship between Ghana and Canada and advocated for the creation of more legal migration routes to discourage the dangers of irregular migration. He highlighted the significant skill sets possessed by Ghanaian youth and proposed the development of a Memorandum of Understanding on Labour Mobility as a strategic solution to migration challenges. Additionally, the Deputy Minister affirmed Ghana’s commitment to collaborating with Canadian authorities to facilitate smooth immigration processes for Ghanaian citizens traveling to Canada for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.
Dr. Kochhar acknowledged Canada’s concerns regarding irregular migration while reaffirming his country’s dedication to a well-coordinated immigration framework for the World Cup. He expressed Canada’s readiness to work closely with the Ghanaian government and explored opportunities for deepening cooperation across multiple sectors. The meeting was also attended by the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu, highlighting the technical focus on border and migration logistics.
