Ghana’s domestic football landscape received a powerful and unprecedented boost as President Kurt Edwin Simeon‑Okraku announced a comprehensive support package designed to ease financial pressures on clubs and elevate the standards of both the Division One League and the Women’s Premier League. Addressing delegates at the 32nd Ordinary Session of Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, the President outlined a plan that signals a decisive commitment to strengthening the foundations of Ghana’s football pyramid.
For the Division One League, the Football Association will continue to absorb referees’ and Match Commissioners’ fees, a major cost that has long strained club budgets. In addition, each of the forty‑eight participating clubs will receive one hundred and twenty thousand Ghana cedis, alongside thirty footballs to support training and matchday preparations. The total investment, estimated at sixteen million, two hundred and forty‑four thousand, one hundred and fifty‑one cedis and twenty‑five pesewas, represents one of the most significant interventions ever directed at the second tier of Ghana’s professional football structure.
The initiative is intended to help clubs manage operational expenses while creating improved conditions for organising a competitive and professionally run league.
The Women’s Premier League will also benefit from substantial assistance. President Simeon‑Okraku confirmed that the FA will continue to cover referees’ and Match Commissioners’ fees for the twenty clubs, while each team will receive one hundred thousand Ghana cedis and thirty pairs of football boots. Fuel support from Melcom and Goil will further ease the logistical demands of the season, ensuring that women’s football continues its upward trajectory in quality, visibility and competitiveness.
The President also commended clubs across the country for investing in their home venues and matchday facilities. He noted visible improvements in dressing rooms, spectator amenities, security installations, sanitation facilities, media working areas and other essential infrastructure. According to him, these upgrades are contributing to football environments that are safer, more professional and more welcoming for players, officials, supporters, media and commercial partners. The combined effect of GFA support and club‑driven investment is expected to raise the professional standards of the domestic game as Ghana prepares for another season of competitive football.
This landmark package reflects a clear vision, one that recognises that strong leagues require strong clubs, and strong clubs require deliberate, sustained support. As the new season approaches, Ghana football stands on the threshold of renewed promise, driven by leadership, investment and a shared commitment to excellence.
