Accra, Ghana – German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has publicly renewed his “deep reverence and adoration” for Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, solidifying the Ghanaian government’s assertion of the strength and vitality of the bilateral friendship.
This appreciation for Ghana’s founding father was powerfully underscored by a solemn visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra on Monday, November 3, 2025, as a key component of his three-day state visit.
Honoring a Pan-African Legacy
During the visit to the Memorial Park, President Steinmeier performed the symbolic gesture of laying a wreath at Dr. Nkrumah’s tomb . This act served as a formal mark of respect and recognition of Nkrumah’s pivotal role not only in securing Ghana’s independence but also in spearheading the broader Pan-African movement and challenging colonial structures globally.
The German President, accompanied by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, also signed the visitors’ book to commemorate the occasion, acknowledging the enduring impact of Nkrumah’s legacy on African liberation and development.
Germany’s Commitment to Modern Ghana
President Steinmeier’s homage to Ghana’s history and its foundational leader frames the modern partnership as one built on shared values and mutual respect. His visit, which also included high-level meetings with President John Dramani Mahama and a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, focused heavily on strengthening contemporary ties in trade, investment, technology, and development cooperation.
The visit’s itinerary included engagements with young Ghanaian IT specialists and a sod-cutting ceremony at the Kumasi Technical Institute, underscoring Germany’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s future industrial and technological goals, in line with the vision of self-determination once espoused by Nkrumah.
A Partnership Built on Respect
The gesture of honoring Dr. Nkrumah is particularly significant in the context of Germany’s efforts to forge deeper, respectful partnerships with African nations. By publicly demonstrating his “deep reverence” for a figure of African self-determination, President Steinmeier signals Germany’s desire for a relationship based on equality and mutual benefit, moving past historical power dynamics. This strategic diplomatic move reinforces the commitment of both nations to work together on global challenges, securing Ghana’s position as a key diplomatic ally in Africa.
