June 8, 2024: Bolingbrook, Illinois — Georgia Gikunoo and Jeremy Lopez recently exchanged vows during a captivating traditional marriage ceremony held in Bolingbrook, Illinois. The event, steeped in West African customs, left a lasting impression on attendees.

For many West Africans, especially Ghanaians, the “traditional engagement” is more than just a prelude to the wedding; it is the wedding itself. Before the influence of Christianity, this ceremony marked the official union between a man and a woman, declaring them husband and wife.

Among the highlights of the day was a playful moment orchestrated by the bride’s family. They paraded a young woman in front of Jeremy, asking if she was his bride. Jeremy, well aware of his “flower,” responded with an emphatic “no.” The groom’s patience paid off when his stunning bride was finally revealed, and he enthusiastically confirmed her as the beautiful flower he had seen in their garden.

The Ghanaian way of performing marriages may seem raw and embellished to outsiders, but its simplicity is admirable. A man seeks a wife, negotiates with her family, and presents requested items—often including schnapps and suitcases—to seal the deal.

Mr. Donatus Kotogbor and Rosemary Amegashie were the emcees of the event . They also acted as “okyeame” (spokespersons) on behalf of the groom and bride, respectively.

Reverend Pius Kokose was the officiant who blessed the marriage.

Chiefs, elders, and members of the Ghanaian community turned out in large numbers to support the bride’s family. The groom’s family also made a significant presence, demonstrating their solidarity.

As Georgia Gikunoo and Jeremy Lopez embark on their journey together, we extend our warmest wishes for a blissful and prosperous marriage.
