Faculty calls for investigation into UTAG–GCTU leadership, urges Ministry to uphold the law
Accra, February 13, 2026 — The simmering governance tensions at the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) erupted into the open today as a group of senior faculty, operating under the name Concerned UTAG Members of GCTU,issued a decisive public statement disowning the Joint Unions’ controversial letter dated February 11, 2026.

In a press release circulated to all major media houses, the Concerned UTAG Members declared unequivocally that the Joint Unions’ petition to the Ministry of Education does not represent the collective position of GCTU faculty, describing it as procedurally flawed, legally unsound, and damaging to the university’s credibility.
Their message is unmistakably clear:
GCTU faculty will not allow misrepresentation, procedural shortcuts, or union overreach to undermine lawful governance.
Faculty Reject Attempt to Dissolve Council
The Concerned Members reaffirmed that the University Council, established under Act 1022, is the only lawful governing authority of GCTU. Any attempt to dissolve or reconstitute it through union declarations, they argue, is illegitimate, unconstitutional, and without effect.
They insist that the Joint Unions’ letter must be treated strictly as the opinion of its signatories, not the voice of GCTU faculty.
Emergency Meeting Vote Declared “Procedurally Void”
The press release exposes serious irregularities in the UTAG–GCTU emergency meeting that purportedly endorsed the unions’ position.
Although results were announced, 19 votes for Motion 2 and 12 for Motion 1, the Concerned Members reveal that:
- Many faculty members, both in person and online, were prevented from voting.
- Discussions were abruptly halted while members still sought clarity.
- The process violated principles of fair representation under Ghana’s Labour Act (Act 651).
They describe the announced results as “procedurally void” and accuse UTAG–GCTU leadership of misrepresenting the faculty mandate.
Integrity of UTAG–GCTU Leadership Questioned
The Concerned Members warn that the union executives’ conduct has:
- Undermined democratic accountability
- Eroded trust in union leadership
- Raised ethical and legal concerns
They call for a full investigation into possible misrepresentation, abuse of office, and violations of labour law.
Council Acted Lawfully — No Dismissal, No Controversy
The faculty also clarify a key point of public confusion:
The Governing Council’s February 3, 2026 letter regarding the Vice-Chancellor was not a dismissal, but a routine statutory notification marking the end of a secondment.
They stress that any extension beyond February 28, 2026 would be unlawful, reinforcing the Council’s position as the legitimate authority.
A Direct Appeal to the Ministry of Education
The Concerned UTAG Members urge the Ministry to:
- Reject the Joint Unions’ letter as unrepresentative
- Uphold Act 1022 and protect lawful governance
- Intervene swiftly to prevent dangerous precedents of union overreach
They warn that the credibility of GCTU, and the confidence of its faculty, depends on decisive, lawful action.
A Turning Point for GCTU
This press release marks one of the strongest internal pushbacks yet against what faculty describe as a pattern of procedural lapses and misrepresentation by UTAG–GCTU leadership.
With governance, legality, and institutional integrity at stake, the coming days will determine whether GCTU emerges stronger or sinks deeper into crisis.

Why does the out-going Vice-Chancellor think the GCTU is his family property for which reason he must do the impossibility to hang on including instigating the union members against themselves. What is he hiding at the GCTU that he’s afraid to leave behind. He ought to be really investigated.
