Gambia produced one of the most dramatic comeback victories in recent AFCON qualification history today at the Accra Sports Stadium, overturning a two goal deficit to defeat Ghana four goals to two in their 2027 AFCON Group C qualifier.
What began as a dominant Ghanaian performance collapsed into a nightmare, leaving the Scorpions celebrating at the top of the group and the Black Stars rooted at the bottom with zero points.
Ghana looked in complete control in the first half. Ernest Nuamah converted a penalty in the twenty seventh minute, and Felix Afena Gyan doubled the lead six minutes later with a brilliant direct free kick. The Accra crowd roared, believing the match was already tilting toward a comfortable Ghanaian victory.
Then came the moment that changed everything. A heated confrontation between Ghana’s K Oppong and Gambia’s Y Bojang earned both players bookings and shattered Ghana’s rhythm. Within a minute, Gambia won a penalty, which Muhammed Badamosi dispatched confidently in the thirty seventh minute. The Scorpions smelled blood.
Just before halftime, Gambia captain, Omar Colley ,swiveled inside the box and fired home the equalizer from a long throw in routine, stunning the stadium and dragging the match to two goals apiece at the break.
The second half belonged entirely to Gambia. In the sixty eighth minute, Ebrima Colley struck to give the visitors their first lead of the afternoon. Ghana pushed desperately for an equalizer, throwing bodies forward deep into stoppage time. That desperation proved costly. Gambia launched a lethal counter attack, and Ebrima Colley finished it off in the ninety first minute, completing his brace and sealing a historic four goal to two victory.
The implications for Group C are severe. Gambia now sits comfortably at the top with six points from two matches. Ghana, after losses to Côte d’Ivoire and now Gambia, remains pointless at the bottom, with their qualification hopes already in jeopardy.
