The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, met with the family of Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia on Monday to provide updates on the government’s efforts to uncover the truth behind the 18-year-old student’s suspicious death in Latvia.
The meeting follows the recent burial of the teenager, whose remains were repatriated to Ghana in July. During the briefing, the Minister disclosed that a fact-finding mission was dispatched from the Ghanaian embassy in Germany to Latvia immediately following the tragedy, and a preliminary report has already been submitted to the Ministry.
Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that Latvian authorities have not yet concluded their investigations into the circumstances of the death. In response, the Minister has formally notified the Latvian government of his intention to lead a high-level delegation to the country to hold direct talks with his counterpart and engage with lead investigators.
This upcoming delegation will notably include representatives from the Ahyia family to ensure transparency. The Minister further assured the family that the Government of Ghana intends to hire independent experts to analyze the final investigative reports from Latvia, emphasizing that every necessary step will be taken to secure justice for the late student.
