Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, met with Professor Samuel A. Ntewusu, Director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, to discuss the implementation of a continental reparations framework.
The meeting focused on aligning national efforts with the African Union’s current theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” which seeks to address historical injustices through formal reparative channels.
The discussions follow a landmark decision made during the 7th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in July 2025 to designate the years 2026 through 2036 as a dedicated decade for the reparations agenda. This long-term strategic vision is being led by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, who serves as the African Union Champion on Reparations.
The collaboration between the Ministry and the University of Ghana aims to provide the academic and diplomatic groundwork necessary to sustain this movement over the next ten years, ensuring that the quest for justice remains a central pillar of African international relations and social policy.
