Bernard Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament for Akatsi-South and First Deputy Speaker of the 9th Parliament, has issued a statement clarifying recent reports that he acted unfriendily toward a journalist during a parliamentary engagement. The MP categorically denied any personal or institutional antagonism toward the media, stating that he holds the press in the “highest regard” and values their “indispensable role” in sustaining Ghana’s democracy.
Ahiafor emphasized his long-standing cordial relationship with the media, noting his history of granting numerous formal and informal interviews and his consistent availability to provide clarity on public interest matters. He clarified that his concern during the incident was solely about the manner in which the interaction was being initiated, not with the journalist personally or the media institution.
The Deputy Speaker stated that he believes responsible journalism requires interactions with public officials, especially within the precincts of Parliament, to be conducted with courtesy, decorum, and mutual respect, suggesting his request for a proper sit-down engagement was not unreasonable.
The First Deputy Speaker concluded his statement by reaffirming his commitment to supporting the work of journalists and ensuring they have the necessary access to inform the public accurately and responsibly. He extended an open invitation for a one-on-one conversation with the journalist in question, identified as Yalley, stating his doors remain open for continued productive engagement with the entire media fraternity, citing past productive relationships with other senior reporters.
