The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing the operational readiness and personnel welfare of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
Speaking at the annual West African Soldiers’ Social Activities (WASSA) year-end celebration, the Minister commended the military for its unwavering professionalism and sacrifice during what he described as a demanding year of service.
The event, which was attended by President John Dramani Mahama, served as a platform to highlight the strategic alignment between national economic goals and the security architecture of the state.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Forson emphasized that the Ministry of Defence remains committed to providing clear strategic policy direction to ensure the military remains responsive to emerging security threats within Ghana and across the subregion. He noted that the government’s “economic reset” and commitment to good governance have provided a stable foundation for the nation’s peace.
The Minister highlighted that a modern and operationally ready military is essential for sustaining Ghana’s progress and unity in the face of both internal and external security challenges.
Addressing the specific needs of the personnel, Dr. Forson stated that the wellbeing of men and women in uniform is a top priority for the Mahama administration. He outlined deliberate steps being taken to improve living standards, with significant focus directed toward five key areas:
accommodation, healthcare, training, career progression, and general welfare.
According to the Minister, these targeted interventions are critical to maintaining high morale and ensuring the overall effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces in the discharge of their duties.
The Finance Minister also addressed the concerns of military retirees and veterans, noting that the government’s welfare obligations extend beyond those currently in active service. He revealed that the administration is currently engaged in constructive dialogue with the 1995/96 year group and over-aged retirees to find fair and sustainable solutions to their grievances.
Dr. Forson concluded by expressing the gratitude of the government and the Military High Command to all service members for their dedication to national stability, invoking blessings on the Armed Forces and the Republic of Ghana.
