ROMEOVILLE, IL – In a proactive effort to combat one of the nation’s most common chronic respiratory illnesses and improve health outcomes within immigrant and underserved communities, the Ghanaian Community Health Clinic and the Romeoville Pentecost Church are joining forces to host a free Asthma Medication Adherence Education & Support Workshop on Sunday, November 1, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Held under the theme “Healthy Lungs, Stronger Communities,” the community-focused health initiative will take place at Romeoville Pentecost Church, 302 S. Budler Road, Romeoville, Illinois 60446. Organizers are inviting individuals living with asthma, parents, caregivers, seniors, and members of the general public to attend this free educational event aimed at reducing preventable asthma attacks and empowering families with life-saving knowledge.

Bridging the Gap Between Treatment and Daily Care

Leading the workshop will be Essi J. Hodogbey, an experienced Chicago-based Respiratory Care Practitioner, who will provide practical, easy-to-understand strategies designed to help participants better manage asthma and other respiratory conditions.

While many patients receive prescriptions, health experts say improper medication use and limited understanding of asthma warning signs continue to contribute to unnecessary emergency room visits and hospitalizations. This workshop seeks to change that narrative through hands-on education and personalized support.

Participants will learn:

  • Proper inhaler techniques to ensure medications reach the lungs effectively.
  • Medication adherence strategies that improve long-term asthma control.
  • Proven methods for identifying and avoiding environmental triggers.
  • Practical daily management skills to reduce flare-ups and complications.
  • Answers to individual concerns during an interactive question-and-answer session.

To further support attendees, organizers will distribute free Peak Flow Meters and Inhaler Spacers while supplies last.

Understanding Asthma’s “Danger Zones”

A major focus of the workshop will be helping participants recognize early warning signs before symptoms become life-threatening.

Attendees will be introduced to the widely used Asthma Danger Zone Framework, which helps patients monitor symptoms and determine the appropriate response:

Green Zone: Good Control

Breathing remains comfortable, symptoms are minimal or absent, and regular treatment plans are working effectively.

Yellow Zone: Caution

Symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath begin to increase. Early action is needed to prevent the condition from escalating.

Red Zone: Medical Emergency

Severe breathing difficulty signals a potentially dangerous asthma attack requiring immediate medical attention.

Health professionals emphasize that recognizing the shift from the Green Zone to the Yellow Zone can often prevent hospitalization and significantly improve quality of life.

Addressing a Persistent Public Health Challenge

Asthma continues to affect millions of Americans and remains a leading cause of emergency room visits, school absences, and missed workdays. Healthcare advocates say community-based education remains one of the most effective tools for reducing complications and improving medication adherence.

By bringing education, resources, and professional guidance directly into the community, organizers hope to close gaps in healthcare access while empowering families to take greater control of their respiratory health.

As organizers note:

“Better adherence leads to fewer asthma exacerbations, healthier breathing, and stronger, more resilient communities.”
