The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers, meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) when the rotating leadership falls to West Africa in 2027.

The recommendation, passed during the ninety-fifth ordinary session of the Council on December 12, 2025, is now expected to be adopted by the Authority of Heads of State and Government on Sunday.

The Council of Ministers formally considered a request from the Government of Ghana and determined that the endorsement was essential to maintaining and increasing the chances of ECOWAS occupying positions in regional and international organizations.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, speaking on the decision, publicly thanked his colleagues, stating that Ghana was “exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President.”

The recommendation noted that the collective support ensures that the interests of ECOWAS continue to be promoted and protected within the AU. Ghana, an important Member State, is confident that its leadership will continue to make Africa proud.
