Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following a decisive victory in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31.
The former Vice President secured 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent of the total valid votes cast, a result that positions him to lead the party into the 2028 general elections. Kennedy Agyapong finished in second place with 46,554 votes (23.76 percent), while Dr. Bryan Acheampong took third with 36,303 votes (18.53 percent). The remaining candidates, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, trailed with 1.02 percent and 0.21 percent of the vote, respectively.
The primary involved over 211,000 delegates who cast their ballots at 333 polling centers across all 275 constituencies. The process was conducted under tight security and was closely monitored by party officials to maintain transparency. Observers and party leaders characterized the exercise as largely peaceful, noting only minimal incidents during the voting and counting phases.
Early collation had indicated a strong performance for Dr. Bawumia, reflecting broad support from the delegates across the country.
In his victory address, Dr. Bawumia extended his gratitude to the delegates and called for immediate reconciliation within the party ranks. Stressing the theme of “United we stand, divided we fall,” he urged all members—including those who supported his opponents—to set aside internal differences and focus on the upcoming national contest. He pledged to run an inclusive and unifying campaign, emphasizing that collective effort is essential for the NPP to present a formidable front to the Ghanaian electorate in the next general elections.
