Ghana’s Parliament has confirmed the detention of Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The information was formally communicated by Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Clerk to Parliament, who stated that the Speaker and Leadership of the House are in active communication with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague to obtain full details.

Early reports circulating internationally suggest that the detention is connected to an investigation involving the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation. Dutch authorities are said to be cooperating with inquiries into alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and romance scam activities estimated at about thirty two million United States dollars. These claims have not yet been confirmed by Dutch or American officials, and Parliament has urged the public to rely on verified updates.

Mr Ohene Frimpong entered Parliament as an Independent candidate, securing the Asante Akyem North seat in the December 2024 general elections after defeating the incumbent candidate of the New Patriotic Party. Since his election, he has publicly indicated his intention to collaborate with the National Democratic Congress caucus in the House.

This development follows earlier allegations in January that he had been arrested in the United Kingdom, a claim he strongly denied at the time.

Parliament has assured the public that further information will be released as soon as official details are confirmed.

Signed
Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror
Clerk to Parliament
