Eleven Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel who were detained in Burkina Faso have been released and have arrived safely in Accra, Ghana, as part of their transit back to Nigeria.
The airmen were taken into custody on December 8, 2025, after their C‑130 military transport aircraft made an emergency precautionary landing in Bobo‑Dioulasso due to a technical malfunction. Burkinabè authorities interpreted the unscheduled landing as a violation of their airspace, leading to the detention of the crew.
High-Level Diplomacy Secures Release
Their freedom was secured following intensive diplomatic negotiations led by a high-powered Nigerian delegation. The team included:
- Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar
- Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed
- Senior officials from the Nigerian Air Force and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The delegation held discussions with top Burkinabè officials in Ouagadougou, including a meeting with President Ibrahim Traoré, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the emergency landing and to press for the release of the detained personnel.
Following these engagements, Burkinabè authorities agreed to free the airmen.
Transit Through Accra
The released personnel departed Burkina Faso and landed at a Ghana Air Force base in Accra, where they are undergoing brief transit procedures. They are expected to continue their journey to Portugal, where they had originally been scheduled to deliver the aircraft for routine maintenance before the unexpected diversion.
Mission to Resume After Ordeal
NAF officials say the crew is in good condition and will resume their maintenance mission once all formalities are completed.
The incident underscores the delicate nature of military aviation operations across West Africa’s tightly monitored airspace and highlights the importance of swift diplomatic intervention in resolving cross-border misunderstandings.
