Accra, Ghana — October 2, 2025
In a landmark announcement that bridges history with forward-looking ambition, Delta Air Lines has unveiled plans to launch seasonal daily nonstop service between Accra and Atlanta beginning December 1, 2025. The new route marks a significant expansion of Delta’s footprint in West Africa and underscores the airline’s enduring commitment to Ghana as it celebrates its centennial year.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Michael Thomas, General Manager of Communications for Delta, emphasized Ghana’s strategic importance within the airline’s Africa network.
“Ghana is a key gateway in Delta’s Africa strategy,” Thomas stated. “Our decision to expand service from Accra reflects our confidence in this market and our commitment to delivering world-class travel experiences to our customers.”
Delta’s presence in Ghana began in 2006, and over the past 19 years, the airline has transported approximately 1.5 million passengers on its New York–JFK route. With the addition of the Atlanta service, Delta will now operate two direct routes to Accra—year-round daily flights from New York and seasonal daily flights from Atlanta—making it the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service from Accra to New York.
Thomas added, “Our nearly two decades of service in Ghana have shown us the strength, resilience, and ambition of this market. As we look ahead, we are not only investing in flights and aircraft—we are investing in people, partnerships, and Ghana’s growth story.”
A Legacy of Service Beyond Aviation
Delta’s impact in Ghana extends far beyond the tarmac. Through its global commitment to reinvest 1% of annual profits into community initiatives, the airline has supported programs that foster education, health, and economic empowerment. Among its most enduring partnerships is its decade-long collaboration with Breast Care International (BCI), a Ghanaian nonprofit dedicated to breast cancer awareness and early detection.
Together, Delta and BCI have educated more than 150,000 individuals, screened over 20,000 people, and identified approximately 2,000 suspected cases that might otherwise have gone undetected. Their outreach has reached deep into rural communities, where more than 65,000 women have received screenings through targeted campaigns. These efforts have saved lives and strengthened public health infrastructure, reinforcing Delta’s role as a socially responsible corporate citizen.
“Delta’s commitment goes far beyond connecting markets,” said Mary Abisola Gbobaniyi, Manager of Sales for West Africa. “It’s about creating jobs, supporting local initiatives, and partnering with communities to make a difference where it matters most.”
Strengthening U.S.–Africa Ties
Delta’s expansion in Ghana is part of a broader strategy to deepen its presence across the African continent. The airline currently operates flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos, Accra, and Dakar, with service to Marrakech set to begin later this month. These routes serve as vital conduits for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, strengthening ties between Africa and the United States.
The introduction of the Airbus A330-900neo on the Accra route last year further exemplifies Delta’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. The aircraft offers enhanced fuel efficiency, modern cabin design, and improved passenger comfort—hallmarks of Delta’s century-long pursuit of excellence.
A Century of Flight, A Future of Promise
Founded in 1925, Delta Air Lines has grown from a regional crop-dusting operation into one of the world’s most respected and reliable carriers. Over the past century, the airline has pioneered advancements in aviation technology, customer service, and sustainability. In 2024 alone, Delta safely transported over 200 million passengers, maintaining its reputation for operational excellence and industry leadership.
As Delta enters its second century, its investment in Ghana signals a renewed commitment to global connectivity, inclusive growth, and shared prosperity. With expanded service, deep community partnerships, and a legacy of innovation, Delta continues to chart a course that honors its past while embracing the future.
