Ghana’s fight against cybercrime recorded a major breakthrough over the weekend as the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), working in joint operations with the Greater Accra Regional Command and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, executed two successful raids that dismantled sophisticated criminal networks operating across the country.

SIMBox Syndicate Busted in Sakumono

In the first coordinated operation, security teams stormed three separate locations around Sakumono, where they uncovered a highly advanced SIMBox fraud operation.

Three Nigerian nationals and their Ghanaian landlord were arrested at the scene.

Investigators say the syndicate had been routing international calls through illegal channels, depriving the state of significant revenue and compromising national security systems. The equipment seized is believed to be part of a wider network currently under investigation.

Sextortion and MoMo Fraud Ring Crushed in Vakpo

A second operation in Vakpo in the Volta Region led to the arrest of a three‑member Ghanaian syndicate involved in:

  • Impersonation
  • Sextortion
  • Mobile Money (MoMo) fraud

The group had been impersonating the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. San Dzata George, using his identity to deceive unsuspecting citizens and extort money.

Authorities describe the scheme as “deliberate, coordinated, and predatory,” targeting vulnerable individuals across multiple regions.

Suspects to Face Full Prosecution

All suspects from both operations have been processed for court and are expected to face charges under Ghana’s cybercrime and criminal statutes.

Security officials issued a firm warning following the arrests:

“Ghana is a hospitable nation, but if you choose to engage in cybercrime, we will track you down, arrest you, and ensure you face the full rigours of the law.”

The CSA emphasized that these operations form part of a broader national strategy to clamp down on digital fraud, protect citizens, and secure Ghana’s digital ecosystem.
