Amazon Store

Chicago, IL — Community health leaders are urging residents to remain vigilant as influenza (flu) activity continues to increase across the city this winter season. Local clinics and healthcare providers are seeing a steady rise in flu-like illnesses, particularly among children, older adults, and individuals with chronic medical conditions.

What We’re Seeing

Patients are presenting with classic flu symptoms, including:
• Fever or chills
• Cough and sore throat
• Body aches and fatigue
• Headache
• Nasal congestion
• Nausea or vomiting (more common in children)

While many cases remain mild, some individuals are developing complications such as dehydration, pneumonia, or worsening of existing conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Certain groups are at higher risk for severe illness from the flu:
• Adults 65 years and older
• Children under 5 years of age, especially those under 2
• Pregnant individuals
• People with chronic medical conditions (asthma, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease)
• Individuals with weakened immune systems

How to Protect Yourself and Your Family

Healthcare providers recommend the following preventive measures:
• Receive the seasonal flu vaccine, which can reduce illness severity and complications
• Practice frequent handwashing with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
• Cover coughs and sneezes appropriately
• Avoid close contact with individuals who are ill
• Remain home when experiencing flu-like symptoms
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

When to Seek Medical Care

Seek prompt medical attention if you or a loved one experiences:
• Difficulty breathing or chest pain
• Persistent high fever
• Confusion or significant weakness
• Signs of dehydration
• Worsening of underlying medical conditions

Early evaluation and treatment can help prevent serious complications, particularly in high-risk individuals.

A Message to Our Community

The flu is preventable, manageable, and treatable. Community awareness, timely vaccination, and early medical evaluation are essential to protecting public health. If you have not yet received your flu vaccine, we encourage you to do so.

Together, we can protect our families and maintain a healthy community throughout flu season.
