A delegation from the Commonwealth Observer Group, chaired by former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has met with the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh,

Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, to discuss preparations for the country’s upcoming general elections and constitutional referendum. Scheduled for February 12, 2026, the polls represent a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s democratic transition.

During the courtesy call, the group discussed its mandate to provide an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process, ensuring it aligns with international standards of transparency and inclusivity.

The high-level engagement followed a series of briefings held earlier today with Commonwealth High Commissioners stationed in Bangladesh, representing nations including the United Kingdom, Canada, Pakistan, Australia, and Malaysia. These discussions focused on the political climate and the logistical readiness of the host nation as it nears election day.

The 14-member observer team, which includes eminent experts such as legal scholars, human rights advocates, and electoral administrators from across the Commonwealth, is tasked with monitoring the conduct of the vote and the accompanying referendum on the “July Charter.” Upon the conclusion of the mission, the group will submit a comprehensive report to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, outlining findings and recommendations for the future of Bangladesh’s democratic governance.
