CHICAGO, IL — The Ghanaian community in Metropolitan Chicago is grieving the loss of Alhaji Abubakar Adjei Okoe, a revered elder, founding community pillar, and longtime advocate for unity among Ghanaians in the diaspora.

Alhaji Okoe was not only a respected leader , he was one of the founding fathers of the Haske Society, helping shape the organization from its earliest days. His influence extended far beyond Haske. He also played a pioneering role in establishing GhanaFest Chicago, now recognized as the largest Ghanaian cultural exposition in the United States. His contributions helped transform GhanaFest from a modest gathering into a national showcase of Ghanaian heritage, culture, and pride.

Within the Ghana National Council (GNC), Alhaji Okoe served with distinction as Haske Society’s representative from the Council’s infancy, becoming one of the early architects of the GNC’s mission and structure. His leadership was marked by wisdom, humility, and a deep commitment to ensuring that the voices of his community were heard and respected.

After many years of dedicated service, he stepped down from the Council upon his retirement, leaving behind a legacy defined by fairness, integrity, and unwavering devotion to community progress. In the years that followed, he battled illness, during which the community continued to hold him in prayer and high regard until his peaceful passing.

A Legacy of Service and Faith

Beyond his organizational leadership, Alhaji Okoe was a pillar of the local Islamic community and a familiar presence at Ghanaian cultural events throughout Chicago. His calm demeanor, thoughtful counsel, and ability to bring people together made him a cherished figure across ethnic and social groups.

“He wasn’t just a representative; he was a father figure to many of us in the Haske Society and a voice of reason within the Council,” said a community member. “His passing leaves a great void .”
