The Ghanaian community in Chicago is grieving the sudden passing of Felix Owusu, a 37‑year‑old resident whose life was cut short in a tragic motor vehicle crash in unincorporated Peotone, Will County.

According to information released by Will County Coroner Laurie H. Summers, Mr. Owusu was pronounced dead at 10:10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, after the crash occurred on the westbound side of Wilmington–Peotone Road near 104th Avenue. The Will County Sheriff’s Department has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, with the final cause and manner of death to be determined following the completion of police findings and toxicology reports.

Details gathered by Sankofaonline paint a portrait of a young man who had worked tirelessly to build a better future for himself and his family. Felix arrived in the Chicago area roughly two years ago, determined to pursue higher education and create new opportunities. He recently completed his college studies, a milestone that brought immense pride to his family and friends.

His journey was not his alone. Felix had succeeded in bringing his wife and their two young children to join him in the United States, a dream many immigrants hold but few achieve so quickly. Friends describe him as a devoted husband, a gentle father, and a man whose quiet determination inspired those around him.

News of his passing has sent waves of sorrow through the Ghanaian and broader African diaspora community in Illinois. Many who knew him speak of a respectful, hardworking young man who carried himself with humility and purpose. His death leaves a painful void not only in his immediate family but also among the many who shared in his aspirations and celebrated his recent achievements.

As the investigation continues, community members are rallying around the bereaved family, offering prayers, comfort, and support during this devastating moment.

Sankofaonline will provide updates as more information becomes available, including funeral arrangements and community support.

Even though I didn’t get chance to meet him, his death reminded me when my son Akwasi Sarpong passed on at Chicago Resurrection Hospital. The pain is still with me. I extend my deepest condolences to his wife and family. Stay strong
