Celebrated Ghanaian Playwright Dr. Mohammed ben Abdallah Dies at 81

ACCRA — Celebrated Ghanaian playwright and theatre scholar Dr. Mohammed ben Abdallah has died at the age of 81. The news of his passing was announced by his daughter, Akosua Abdallah, in a Facebook post on Friday, September 19, 2025. She stated that he died the day before, on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
In her post, Akosua Abdallah shared, “Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un (Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return).

With deep sorrow and a heavy heart, I announce the passing of my beloved father, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Abdallah, who returned to his Maker yesterday. A man of wisdom, humility, and unwavering faith, he served his people, his family, and his country with honour and grace.”

In accordance with Islamic rites, Dr. Abdallah was laid to rest on Friday, September 19, following Jumu’ah prayers in Kumasi. A three-day Dua will also be held in Kumasi.

Born on April 25, 1944, in Kumasi, Dr. Abdallah earned a Teacher’s Certificate ‘A’ from Wesley College before pursuing his passion for drama. He studied in the United States, obtaining an MFA in Theatre Arts from the University of Georgia and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.
Known as one of Ghana’s foremost playwrights, he was instrumental in the creation of the National Theatre of Ghana.

He oversaw its construction, established its organizational structure, and ensured it had resident companies, including the National Drama Company, the National Dance Company, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He also served as the Head of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana. His theatrical works, which blended traditional African and European styles, often explored postcolonial themes.

In addition to his career in academia and the arts, Dr. Abdallah was involved in politics, serving as Secretary for Education and Culture under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) in the 1980s and 1990s. His notable plays and writings include The Slaves, The Fall of Kumbi, Verdict of the Cobra, and The Trial of Mallam Ilya.
