TEMA, GHANA – CBI Ghana Ltd. has achieved a historic breakthrough with the commissioning of the world’s largest calcined clay plant on 5 March 2026. The facility, situated within the Tema Free Zones Enclave, represents a US$110 million investment and marks a major shift toward sustainable, locally driven construction materials in Ghana.
By championing Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) technology, CBI Ghana is reducing the nation’s dependence on imported clinker, a commodity for which Ghana remains Africa’s largest importer. The transition to locally sourced clay strengthens the Ghana Cedi, deepens domestic value chains, and positions Ghana as a global Centre of Excellence for green construction.
Key Speech Highlights
President John Dramani Mahama
“What CBI Ghana has built here is a statement about Ghanaian potential. For decades, our industrial growth has faced a punishing import bill rooted in exporting raw materials and importing finished goods. Today, we are proving that responsible African industrialisation is possible. I see the engineers, the technicians, and the laboratory staff here; Ghana’s industrial future will be built by your hands.”
Frédéric Albrecht, Managing Director, CBI Ghana Ltd.
“The eyes of the cement world are on Ghana as we set a new global standard for sustainable construction. Every year, Ghana spends close to half a billion US dollars importing clinker. That is hard currency that can stabilise our local currency.
From this plant, the largest of its kind in the world, we are replacing imported clinker with locally produced calcined clay, cutting carbon emissions by up to 40 percent — the equivalent of removing 80,000 cars from the road annually. We built this plant not for CBI alone, but to inspire the global cement industry and ensure Ghanaian scientists lead the future of sustainable construction.”
Fact Sheet: The “World’s Largest” LC3 Plant
Global Leadership
Officially the world’s largest Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) plant.
Production Capacity
400,000 tons of calcined clay annually.
Efficiency
Advanced packing technology loads a 40‑ton truck in 25 minutes, packing up to 10 bags at a time.
Economic Impact
Reduces clinker imports by approximately 400,000 tons per year, equivalent to 10 vessels. This shift:
- strengthens domestic value chains
- supports high‑skilled jobs in laboratories and factory operations
- conserves foreign exchange
The LC3 Advantage: Sustainability and Carbon Reduction
- Up to 40 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional cement
- Lower thermal energy requirements during production
- Major contribution to Ghana’s national climate and sustainability goals
Technical Excellence: Why LC3 Matters
CBI Ghana’s LC3 cement is engineered for Ghana’s tropical and coastal conditions.
- Durability: Superior resistance for marine and high‑density infrastructure
- Workability: Consistent performance for both mass concrete and precision block work
- Structural Integrity: Meets and exceeds Ghana Standards Authority requirements
