The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its decision to not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election. The by-election is being held to find a replacement for the late Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, who died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, alongside seven others.

The decision was made during a National Steering Committee meeting at the party’s headquarters on Monday, August 11, 2025. According to a statement released by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP considered various factors, including the circumstances of Dr. Mohammed’s death and the potential for increased national polarization.

The NPP believes it would be “inhumane and unconscionable” to subject the nation to a competitive electoral process so soon after the tragedy. The party stated its desire to avoid the “tension and acrimony often associated with the conduct of by-elections.” The statement emphasized that the greatest tribute to the departed MP would be to ensure a smooth and peaceful replacement for the people of Tamale Central.

The party announced that it will not take part in the contest when the Electoral Commission of Ghana opens nominations for the by-election. The decision, the NPP stated, is in the “national interest.”

Accra, Ghana – Voting has concluded in the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, with the sorting and counting of ballots now underway across all 19 polling stations in the constituency. Despite the Electoral Commission’s expectation of over 6,000 registered voters participating, the exercise was characterized by a noticeably low voter turnout throughout the day.
The rerun was not without incident, as reports emerged of sporadic violence at several polling centers. Journalists covering the election, a former minister of state, and a party official were reportedly assaulted in separate incidents, though details on the nature and extent of these assaults are still emerging.

The by-election was necessitated by disputes stemming from the original election outcome, with both the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenging results. Both parties had claimed victory and raised concerns over alleged irregularities, specifically citing missing or unverifiable pink sheets from various parts of the constituency, leading to the decision for a partial rerun to determine the parliamentary representative for Ablekuma North. The focus now shifts to the collation of results as the constituency awaits the final declaration.

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has issued a public apology to Ghanaians for past governance shortcomings. Speaking on Channel One’s political program “The Point of View”, Kodua acknowledged that the party fell short in some areas during its time in government.

“We did our best, but we couldn’t have gotten everything right,” Kodua said. “And I have always said that on behalf of our then government, our political party — certain things that we could not do right — we apologise for it.”

The NPP, which lost the 2024 general elections after eight years in power, is undergoing introspection and restructuring. Kodua emphasized the party’s readiness to learn from its past and grow stronger, pledging that the NPP will not repeat mistakes if given another opportunity.

The party’s presidential primaries are set for January 31, 2026, and a major constitutional reform is expected to be adopted at the National Delegates Conference in July 2025. The NPP leadership has insisted that the party is focused on internal restructuring to win back public trust.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that its National Chairman, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, has taken a short break from the ongoing nationwide “Thank You” tour to attend to some pressing matters. The tour, aimed at expressing gratitude to Ghanaians for their support, has seen the party’s leadership engage with members and stakeholders in various regions, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation.

However, the announcement comes amidst controversy surrounding the tour, including a violent incident in the Ashanti Region where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology was reportedly stabbed. Furthermore, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and hopeful flagbearer, has immediately withdrawn from the tour, citing disagreements and disturbances during the tour.

Despite the challenges, the party has assured that the National Chairman remains fully committed to the tour and will rejoin the team in due course. The party appreciates the continued support, enthusiasm, and cooperation of its members and is working to ensure the tour’s success.

President John Dramani Mahama has said that the work of the Constitutional Review Committee will not be an exercise in futility.

He assured that the work of the committee will be put to proper use.

“Your work will not be in vain, this will not be an exercise in futility…this exercise is not about any political party, it is about Ghana,” he said when he swore into office the committee members at a function at the seat of government, the Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday January 30.

The committee which has six months to finish its work starting today Thursday, January 30, 202,5 is chaired by the Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD- Ghana) Professor H Kwasi Prempeh.

The committee comprises legal scholars, political scientists, and civil society leaders, all recognized for their expertise and commitment to good governance.

The committee is tasked with identifying gaps and challenges in the implementation of previous constitutional review efforts, engaging with stakeholders to gather diverse perspectives, and formulating actionable recommendations to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions and processes.

President Mahama emphasized the importance of the committee’s work, stating, “This review is crucial to ensuring that our Constitution remains a living document, responsive to the evolving needs and aspirations of our people.“
