AYANFURI — A deep pall of sorrow has fallen over the Ayanfuri traditional area in the Dunkwa On Offin Division following the sudden and heartbreaking death of Nana Kwabena Okyere, the Mmrantehene, or Youth Chief, of Ayanfuri.
The tragedy unfolded on Saturday afternoon, May 9, 2026, during the funeral rites of the late Abusua Panyin Akwasi Kwateng. What was meant to be a dignified farewell to an elder turned into a shocking moment of accidental self inflicted gunfire.
The Incident
According to police reports, Chief Inspector Peter Sadaari, the Station Officer at Ayanfuri, received a distress call at about 3:20 PM. Eyewitnesses stated that Nana Kwabena Okyere accidentally discharged a pump action gun into his own abdomen while taking part in the funeral activities.
A video circulating on the social media platform TikTok appears to show the devastating moment the deceased pointed the weapon toward his midsection before it fired.
Medical Response and Police Action
The Mmrantehene was rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life.
“The victim was brought in around 2:00 PM with a deep gunshot wound to the abdomen and protruding intestines,” a medical officer told the investigating officers, Detective Inspector Agnes Amissah and Chief Inspector Sadaari.
Despite the efforts of the medical team, Nana Kwabena Okyere passed away while receiving emergency treatment.
Current Status
By the time police arrived at the Pentecost Hospital, the body had already been transferred to the Dunkwa On Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police officials confirm that arrangements are underway to visit the municipal morgue to formally inspect the body and continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the unnatural death.
