The Accra High Court has dismissed an application filed by defense lawyer , Andy Appiah‑Kubi, seeking to withdraw from the ongoing criminal trial involving Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman ,Bernard Antwi‑Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. The case centers on allegations of illegal mining (galamsey) activities at Samreboi.
Appiah‑Kubi, who represents the first accused, informed the court that he wished to step aside as counsel. After reviewing the application, the court ruled that the request lacked sufficient grounds and declined to grant the withdrawal. This aligns with broader judicial principles on counsel withdrawal standards and the court’s responsibility to prevent disruptions in ongoing criminal proceedings.
In a second ruling, the court also dismissed a defense motion seeking additional disclosures from the prosecution. The judge held that the state had already met its disclosure obligations and that the request did not demonstrate any material deficiency requiring further orders. This decision reflects established norms on disclosure obligations in criminal trials.
