It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of Mr. Yaw Mintah, a longtime Ghanaian immigrant to the United States, who succumbed to a prolonged illness today, February 7, 2025. He was 87. Mr. Mintah was a trailblazer, one of the earliest Ghanaian pioneers to establish roots in Chicago. His legacy is a testament to his unwavering commitment to community and cultural heritage.
A true pillar of the Ghanaian community, Mr. Mintah graciously opened his home to a multitude of new immigrants from Ghana, extending his hospitality to both family and non-family members alike. His generosity and support provided a foundation for many as they navigated their new lives in the United States.

Mr. Mintah’s contributions to preserving and promoting Ghanaian culture in Chicago are unparalleled. He played a pivotal role in training Ghanaian youth in the performance of traditional dances, particularly during celebrations of Ghana’s independence and at the vibrant Ghanafest.
