ASSIN FOSU, Ghana — In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken the conscience of the nation, a group of armed individuals, including a woman , stormed the Assin Wurakese health facility and violently attacked a patient receiving emergency treatment for machete wounds. The assault, captured on video and widely circulated online, has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed calls for justice and protection of healthcare workers and their patients .
According to eyewitness accounts and footage reviewed by SankofaOnline, the attackers, approximately six in number, entered the hospital with long wooden sticks and proceeded to beat the wounded patient while he lay helpless on the floor. The woman among them, with a child strapped to her back, participated in the assault as stunned medical staff looked on in horror.
“This was not just an attack on a patient,” said one nurse who asked to remain anonymous. “It was an attack on the very idea of sanctuary, on the principle that hospitals and clinics are places of healing, not battlegrounds.”
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, had reportedly been admitted following a machete-related altercation earlier that day. The assailants, believed to be connected to that incident stormed the facility with impunity.
Now, the aftermath is rippling through the community. Health workers at the facility are shaken and fearful, with some threatening to abandon their posts if safety cannot be guaranteed. “We are not soldiers,” one staff member said. “If we are not protected, how can we provide safe care?”
SankofaOnline joins the chorus of voices demanding swift and decisive action. We abhor such acts of street justice and call on Ghana’s security services to arrest and prosecute all individuals involved to the fullest extent of the law. No one, regardless of motive , has the right to violate the sanctity of a hospital or endanger the lives of caregivers and patients.
This incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need to reinforce security at public health facilities and to educate communities on the rule of law. Vigilantism cannot be allowed to fester. If left unchecked, it threatens not only lives but the very fabric of civil society.
As investigations continue, SankofaOnline will remain committed to reporting with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering belief in justice. We stand with the health workers of Assin Fosu and with every Ghanaian who believes in peace, dignity, and the rule of law.
