A six-member delegation led by the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam, has paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. William Agyapong, at the Military Headquarters in Accra. The visit served to congratulate the CDS on his appointment, formally inform him about the upcoming 2026 World Assemblies of God Congress, and share the church’s history and activities.
Rev. Wengam noted that as the church prepares to celebrate its centenary, the support of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) would be invaluable in safeguarding peace and ensuring national hospitality for international delegates attending the 2026 event. The General Superintendent also extended his sympathies to Lt. Gen. Agyapong over the recent stampede incident at the El Wak Stadium, commending efforts made to improve screening processes to prevent future occurrences.
Accompanying the General Superintendent were key church leaders, including Rev. Dr. Ernest Birikorang, General Secretary, and Rev. Dr. Simon Abu Baba, General Treasurer.
In his response, Lt. Gen. Agyapong pledged the military’s support and collaboration, assuring the delegation of his commitment to the success of the congress. While acknowledging the stampede incident as unfortunate, he emphasized that corrective measures had been implemented after lessons were learned. The CDS further requested continuous prayers for the Ghana Armed Forces.
The meeting concluded with prayers and the exchange of presentations, symbolising a continued partnership between the church and the Ghana Armed Forces.
