The Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has marked another significant milestone in the nation’s security architecture with the graduation of 20 highly trained operators from Special Operations Forces Basic Course 5-26 at Gondar Barracks in Accra on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The graduation ceremony underscored Ghana’s commitment to building a modern, agile and combat-ready force capable of responding to evolving security threats, particularly terrorism and cross-border criminal activities. Addressing the graduates, the Acting Chief of the Army Staff, Brigadier General Franklyn Kwasi Agbebo, highlighted the increasingly vital role of special operations forces in safeguarding national security through intelligence-driven missions, precision engagements and rapid-response operations.

He noted that emerging security challenges across the sub-region demand highly skilled personnel capable of operating in complex environments and stressed the importance of strengthening Ghana’s border security and counterterrorism capabilities, especially along the country’s northern frontiers. Brigadier General Agbebo urged the newly qualified operators to remain committed to the highest standards of discipline, physical fitness, tactical excellence and professional integrity, emphasizing that the coveted special operations badge symbolizes duty, sacrifice and responsibility rather than privilege.
The Commander of ASOB, Brigadier General Richard Kainyi Mensah, praised the Brigade’s remarkable progress and growing international reputation, citing its impressive performances in multinational military exercises and competitions. He singled out the Brigade’s silver medal achievement at the 2026 Cambrian Patrol in the United Kingdom, describing it as a historic accomplishment for an African military force and a testament to the professionalism, resilience and operational competence of Ghanaian soldiers on the global stage.
Looking ahead, Brigadier General Mensah disclosed that assessment and selection for Special Operations Forces Basic Course 6 will take place in November 2026. He encouraged qualified female officers and soldiers to seize the opportunity and contribute to the expanding role of women within Ghana’s elite military units.
The ASOB Commander also expressed profound gratitude to the Military High Command, supporting formations, training institutions and international partners whose continued collaboration has played a pivotal role in enhancing the Brigade’s training standards and operational effectiveness.
The journey to graduation was an arduous one. The course began with 87 personnel, comprising two officers and 85 soldiers, who underwent a rigorous assessment and selection process in November 2025. Only 30 candidates earned the opportunity to proceed to the intensive training programme, which commenced on January 12, 2026. After nine months of demanding physical, mental and tactical instruction, 20 personnel, made up of one officer and 19 soldiers, successfully completed the course, earning their place among the Ghana Armed Forces’ elite special operations community.
The successful graduation of Course 5-26 not only reflects the uncompromising standards of ASOB training but also reinforces Ghana’s readiness to confront emerging security threats while strengthening national and regional stability through a highly capable special operations force.
