The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has achieved a significant breakthrough in the fight against violent crime with the conviction and sentencing of two notorious robbery suspects after a full trial at the Bekwai Circuit Court.
The convicts , Francis Oppong, popularly known as Kwame Abuu, of Kyekyewere near Obuasi, and Francis Nyamekye, alias Amearo, were found guilty of robbery and related offences following months of meticulous police investigations and a successful prosecution.
Oppong and Nyamekye were first arraigned on 30 January 2024, facing charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetment of robbery, and robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1), 20(1), and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
On 5 January 2026, His Honour Isaac Appeatu Esq., presiding over the Bekwai Circuit Court, delivered judgment. Oppong received 15 years imprisonment with hard labour, while Nyamekye , deemed to have played a more direct and violent role , was handed 25 years imprisonment with hard labour. Both men have since been transferred to the Kumasi Central Prison to begin their sentences.
Robbery Planned With Precision
The convictions stem from a violent robbery that occurred on 16 December 2023 at Kyekyewere, targeting a small‑scale miner. Police investigations revealed that the two convicts, together with accomplices still at large, carefully planned and executed the attack at both the victim’s residence and mining site.
Oppong, who lived in the same community as the victim, was found to have acted as an informant , monitoring the miner’s movements and feeding critical information to the robbery gang.
During the attack, the victim was assaulted and sustained injuries. The robbers escaped with:
- A pump‑action gun
- A Huawei mobile phone valued at GH¢1,200
- 18 pounds of gold worth approximately GH¢100,000
- GH¢2,000 in cash
Breakthrough Arrest
A major breakthrough came when police intelligence led to the arrest of Nyamekye at a private hospital in Obuasi, where he was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds sustained during a separate failed robbery attempt. His injuries and subsequent statements helped investigators piece together the full scope of the Kyekyewere attack.
Manhunt Continues
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing the remaining accomplices who are currently on the run. Authorities say efforts are underway to track and bring them before the law.
The successful conviction, police say, underscores the Command’s determination to clamp down on violent crime and ensure justice for victims across the region.
