The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has directed all shops, markets and commercial centers within the metropolis to close from 6 a.m. to noon as part of activities marking this month’s National Sanitation Day. The directive, issued late Thursday, forms part of a renewed push to enforce public participation in the nationwide clean‑up exercise.
According to the Assembly, the temporary closure is intended to ensure that traders, shop owners and market associations fully join the communal clean‑up rather than conducting business as usual. Municipal officers are expected to patrol major commercial zones to monitor compliance and support community groups.
The AMA says the exercise will focus on desilting drains, clearing refuse from public spaces, and addressing sanitation hotspots identified in recent inspections. Residents are encouraged to participate actively and to avoid dumping waste into gutters during the period.
The Assembly’s directive comes amid growing public concern over deteriorating sanitation conditions in parts of Accra, especially markets and densely populated trading corridors. Officials say the half‑day closure is necessary to restore discipline and reinforce the civic responsibility expected on National Sanitation Day.
Traders who fail to comply may face administrative sanctions under existing sanitation bylaws.
