Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo today paid a glowing tribute to the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady as “undoubtedly one of the most consequential Ghanaian women of her generation” and the “embodiment of the women’s struggle for self-empowerment.” In a statement released following her burial service on Friday, November 28, 2025, the former President highlighted Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings’ influence, noting that her activism resonated beyond Ghana’s borders, securing her a place among Africa’s best-known women

He recalled a specific instance of her stature, recounting his decision in 2018, while serving as President, to appoint her to lead Ghana’s delegation to the funeral of South Africa’s Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Mr. Akufo-Addo explained that despite her not being a member or sympathizer of his government, he believed she was the most appropriate Ghanaian woman for the high-profile assignment. He fondly remembered her as a “vivacious, sparkling woman whose company and wit I enjoyed very much.”

The former President and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, extended their deepest condolences to her children—Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina, and Kimathi—her wider family, and the entire Ghanaian nation for the loss of the “vibrant woman.” At the burial service, the former President concluded with a prayer, asking God to grant her soul a peaceful resting place.
