ACCRA, GHANA : In a sweeping move to ensure the nation’s capital reflects the grandeur of Ghana’s upcoming 70th independence anniversary, President John Mahama has issued a strict mandate to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to immediately commence a massive facelift of all principal roads across Accra.
The directive aims to completely overhaul and beautify Accra’s major transport networks, with a non-negotiable completion deadline set for before March of next year. As Ghana prepares to mark seven decades of self-rule, the government is mobilizing intensive resources to present a modernized, highly accessible capital city to the world.
For a historic milestone like the Platinum Jubilee, Accra is expected to serve as the vibrant epicenter of national festivities. The city anticipates a massive influx of international dignitaries, global tourists, and thousands of Ghanaians from the diaspora returning home to partake in the celebrations. To accommodate this surge and project national pride, the road rehabilitation project will encompass the city’s critical arterial routes. Planned upgrades are expected to include extensive pothole eradication, fresh asphalt overlays, improved street lighting, upgraded drainage systems, and modernized traffic markings.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways is now tasked with rapidly deploying contractors and expediting ongoing works to meet the tight timeframe. This ambitious urban renewal strategy is designed not only to facilitate seamless traffic flow during the high-profile events in March but also to serve as a lasting infrastructural legacy for the daily commuters and residents of Accra.
With the March deadline fast approaching, residents of the capital can expect an immediate and visible uptick in construction activity. As the nation gears up to celebrate 70 years of independence, this comprehensive infrastructure drive signals a clear commitment to ensuring that Accra shines on the global stage when the festivities begin.
