In a decisive judicial move that has sent tremors through Ghana’s political and financial corridors, the Accra High Court has granted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) a warrant to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. The order, issued after an application supported by the Office of the Attorney General, marks a significant escalation in an unfolding investigation into alleged financial misconduct at SIC Life Savings & Loans Company Ltd.
Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem‑Sai, confirmed that the MP’s imminent arrest forms part of EOCO’s broader inquiry into a complaint of unauthorised financial transactions at the institution. According to prosecutors, the transactions in question allegedly resulted in financial loss, dissipation of public funds, money laundering, and other offences that fall squarely within EOCO’s statutory mandate.
Sources within the investigative establishment describe the case as one involving complex financial flows, questionable authorisations, and suspected breaches of fiduciary duty. EOCO, empowered under Act 804, is expected to move swiftly following the court’s approval, with the arrest warrant clearing the final procedural hurdle.
The development raises fresh questions about accountability within public‑linked financial institutions and the extent to which political actors may be implicated in operational irregularities. It also places renewed attention on EOCO’s evolving posture, one that increasingly targets sophisticated financial schemes and high‑profile individuals.
For now, the Manhyia South MP stands at the centre of a legal storm whose implications may reverberate beyond Parliament and into Ghana’s broader governance discourse.
Sankofaonline will continue to monitor the situation closely as EOCO prepares to execute the warrant and advance its investigation.
