The Northern Ghana Diaspora Community in the USA is preparing for a historic cultural milestone, one that blends heritage, identity, and the enduring spirit of Dagbon.
On October 3rd, 2026, the community will gather at Symphony Hall, 1020 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey, for the grand coronation of Idrisu Alhassan Abdulai as the Illinois Diema Naa , a moment that marks a new chapter in the leadership and cultural continuity of Dagbon in North America.
Under the distinguished leadership of North America Dagomba Chief , Alhaji Mohammed Ibn Umar, known traditionally as Yelizoli Gbanganlana, this coronation stands as both a celebration and a reaffirmation. It honors the traditions that have shaped Dagbon for centuries while recognizing the evolving role of chieftaincy within the diaspora. For many, it is a reminder that even far from home, the drumbeat of culture continues to echo.
A Day of Ceremony, Culture, and Community
The coronation ceremony will take place from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, featuring the formal installation of Idrisu Alhassan Abdulai into his new role. The event promises a rich display of Dagbon protocol, traditional rites, and the symbolism that accompanies the elevation of a chief.

From 3:00 PM until 2:00 AM, the community will transition into the vibrant Damba Festival , a night of music, dance, drumming, and cultural expression.
