Chicago’s Ghanaian community witnessed a season of democratic renewal this year as the Ghana National Council, the GaDangme Community Organization, and the Ewe Association all went to the polls to elect new executives. Each association, governed by a three‑year, two‑term limit, embraced the moment with a sense of continuity and purpose. Among them, the GaDangme Community Organization’s transition stood out for its symbolism, unity, and the dignified passing of the torch from one of its most impactful leaders in recent memory.

At the Somuah Hall on 4057 N. Keeler Avenue in Chicago, members gathered for a solemn yet uplifting ceremony as outgoing President , Mr. Sonny Mills, handed over leadership to his former treasurer and current elected President , Mr. Jonathan Buxton. The atmosphere was reverent, reflective, and hopeful, an embodiment of the GaDangme spirit. Reverend Lartey administered the oath of office to all elected executives present, invoking divine guidance, wisdom, and unity for the new administration. He honored past leaders whose sacrifices built the foundation the organization stands on today and congratulated the newly elected officers entrusted with its future.
The new executive team is as follows:
Mr. Jonathan Buxton – President
Mr. Albert Baddoo – Vice President
Mr. Eric Laryea – Secretary
Mr. Kelvin Lartey – Assistant Secretary
Ms. Abigail Nortey – Treasurer
Ms. Theresa Abban – Assistant Treasurer
Mr. Danny Bekoe – Male Organizing Secretary
Ms. Rita Blackwell – Female Organizing Secretary
Mr. Clifford Botchway – Sergeant-at-Arms
In his farewell remarks, Mr. Sonny Mills delivered a heartfelt reflection on six years of service marked by growth, reform, and cultural revival. He expressed deep gratitude to members for the unwavering support that allowed his administration to implement meaningful changes.
In a gesture of humility, Mr. Mills began by asking forgiveness from anyone he may have offended during his tenure and extended the same grace to those who may have wronged him.
One of his proudest achievements was the restoration of the Homowo celebration,an iconic cultural festival last observed during the reign of the late Mantse (Chief) , Paa Lante of blessed memory . Its revival under his leadership rekindled a tradition that once served as the spark for what would eventually become the renowned GhanaFest celebrations in Chicago.

He reminded members that although Homowo could not be held annually due to logistical constraints, the organization ensured its observance whenever conditions allowed, preserving its cultural significance for future generations.
Financial stewardship was another hallmark of his tenure. Mr. Mills announced that the organization’s cash reserves had grown ten- to elevenfold under his care, a revelation that drew spontaneous applause from the audience. He credited this achievement to increased transparency, disciplined financial management, and the commitment of members who consistently honored their dues and other financial obligations.
Membership also expanded significantly, including growth within the Dzaase, strengthening the organization’s traditional leadership structure. Under his administration, a new Mantse, Dzaase Tse, and Mankralo were installed. The Royal Court represented the organization with dignity and consistency.
He noted with pride that throughout his tenure, the chieftaincy, the Dzaase, and the executive worked in rare harmony, maintaining a cordial relationship that strengthened the organization’s cultural and administrative foundation.
He closed with a heartfelt appeal for members to offer the incoming administration the same loyalty and support that sustained his own.
A member captured the sentiment of many when he remarked, “Under Sonny Mills, this organization found its stability, rediscovered its strength , and enjoyed a rare season of peace.”
Newly sworn-in President, Jonathan Buxton, opened his remarks with a Ga song which translates,“Help me, GaDangme, help me”,captured both his humility and his call for collective action. Speaking largely in Ga, he emphasized that the strength of the organization lies in its people and that progress is only possible when every member contributes. He urged the members to look out for one another, embrace a hands-on approach to organizational life, and strengthen the welfare structures that support members in times of need.
Mr. Buxton outlined his vision for a more engaged and future‑oriented GaDangme community. Central to this vision is the creation of a youth platform designed to inspire younger generations to participate actively in cultural and organizational activities. He encouraged parents to introduce their children to the platform, ensuring continuity of identity and leadership. He expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and reminded members that the positions of Public Relations Officer and Financial Secretary remain open, inviting capable individuals to step forward and serve.
The ceremony drew former executives, elders, members of the organization , and a strong delegation from the Kwahu United Association. Their presence underscored the spirit of solidarity within Chicago’s Ghanaian community.
The celebration drew to a spirited close as guests shared generous servings of food and drink, while music filled the hall with an energy that lifted revelers to their feet.
The GaDangme Community Organization enters this new chapter with renewed energy, strengthened traditions, and a leadership team poised to build on the legacy of those who came before them.
