April 5, 2025 – Chicago, Illinois: It was a deeply solemn day at Leak and Son’s Funeral Home on 7838 S. Cottage Grove, as over 500 attendees gathered to pay their final respects to the late Reverend Dexter Gabriel Abankwa. The air was heavy with grief and remembrance as a diverse group of mourners—youth, church congregations, and members of various social organizations within the Ghanaian community—came together to honor a life well-lived, though tragically cut short.

Tears flowed freely as the service unfolded, with the emotional weight of the loss visible on every face. Adults and youth alike wept uncontrollably, united in their sorrow over the passing of a remarkable individual whose life had left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. The moment that truly shattered the collective resolve of the mourners was when the hymn “There is a Land That is Fairer Than Day” rang out through the trumpet’s solemn blasts. The melody, steeped in hope and eternity, triggered a fresh wave of tears that flowed unabated, a poignant reminder of the profound impact of Dexter’s presence and his untimely departure.

Reverend Abankwa, who passed away on January 20, 2025, at the tender age of 30, succumbed to a brief illness at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. Though his years were short, his legacy is vast. A son of the late Reverend Daniel Abankwa, Dexter inherited not only faith but also a spirit of compassion and service. He was far more than a clergyman—he was a bright light within his community, known for his unwavering warmth, his ability to uplift others, and his dedication to his church.

His life was characterized by selflessness and humility, as demonstrated by his enthusiastic support of churches and church conventions, where he would often volunteer his musical talents. Dexter’s skill at the keyboard was a gift he generously shared, using music to inspire and comfort those around him. His departure leaves a void not only for his family and close friends but also for the wider community that he so faithfully served.

His brother, Dr. Abankwa, now stands as the sole bearer of Dexter’s legacy—a legacy rooted in love, compassion, and faith. The late Reverend’s words, captured in a poignant post on his Facebook wall, resonate even more deeply now: “Being happy never goes out of style.” This simple yet profound sentiment encapsulates the joyful spirit he radiated and the optimism he shared with those lucky enough to know him.

The final funeral rites are set to take place tonight at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, located at 6330 W. 127th Street, Palos Heights, Illinois. As the community gathers once more to bid farewell to Reverend Dexter Abankwa, his memory will undoubtedly live on as a source of inspiration, reminding all of the power of love and service in shaping the world around us.

May he find eternal rest, and may his legacy continue to guide and uplift those who mourn him.
