Last Saturday, September 14, 2024, Mr. Jones Agyei, a highly respected elder in the Ghanaian community of Chicago, honored his late father’s memory with a heartfelt celebration. The event, held at the bustling 83rd and Ellis Community Center in Chicago, Illinois, drew many residents, out-of-state, and guests from Ghana to support the family. There was a grand turnout of chiefs and queens from various organizations in Chicago.

The Chicago Okuapemman chiefs, queenmothers, and visiting chiefs from Ghana delighted the audience with captivating Fontomfrom dances.The highlight of the funeral was when, for the first time, the Ga Mantse (chief) of Chicago, Nii Yebouh Nortey Odiasempah I, took to the floor and showcased impressive dance moves to the Akwapim Fontomfrom rhythms.

In keeping with tradition, Mr. Jones’s wife, Ohembea Obaatanpa Abena Acheamponmaa, Queen of the Okuapeman Fekuw, lavished her husband with numerous gifts, some generously shared with the attendees. This event exemplified how Ghanaians abroad continue to uphold their cultural heritage, celebrating the lives of the departed with the same enthusiasm as back home. These gatherings provide financial support and aid in the healing process for the bereaved family.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, DJ Odikro delivered an outstanding performance. He seamlessly blended traditional Ghanaian rhythms with contemporary beats, energizing and engaging the crowd throughout the night. His masterful mixing and infectious energy ensured the celebration was memorable and uplifting.

The dynamic duo of emcees, Nana Yaw Marfo and Kwame Akuffo Mega delivered an exceptional performance, skillfully guiding the event with their charisma and energy. Their seamless coordination and engaging presence ensured the celebration flowed smoothly and entertained everyone throughout the evening.
