PARIS, FRANCE – As the world prepares for the Paris Olympics, the World Health Organization (WHO) is working closely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the French Government to make the Games a success, not just for athletes, but also for spectators.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the organization’s commitment to promoting physical activity and protecting people from various health threats. The WHO and IOC have launched the Let’s Move campaign, encouraging sports stars and the public to engage in physical activity for better health.

In addition to promoting physical activity, WHO health security experts are working to safeguard people’s health during the Games, preparing for potential health-related scenarios such as heatwaves, infectious disease outbreaks, and crowd management.

The organization has also developed joint public health advice for travelers attending the Olympics and Paralympics, providing guidance on vaccines, protecting against illnesses, and staying cool and hydrated.

Dr. Tedros will participate in the Olympic Torch Relay and speak at the Paris Summit on Sports for Sustainable Development, where WHO will make commitments to mobilize for nutrition and expand support to countries to improve diets and reduce obesity.

With the Paris Olympics set to begin, WHO is dedicated to ensuring a healthy and safe experience for all involved.
