WHO Director-General’s Award for Global Health Honors Outstanding Contributions

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, presented his Award for Global Health to three individuals for their remarkable contributions to advancing global health at the 77th World Health Assembly.

Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley

Her Excellency Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, received the award for her leadership in climate action and health, and her work as the Chair of the Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. Dr. Tedros praised her “exemplary leadership in fighting for a more equitable, just, and sustainable world” and her efforts to combat climate change, the greatest health threat facing humanity.

Professors Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman

Professors Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman of the University of Pennsylvania were awarded for their outstanding contributions to the development of mRNA vaccines for COVID-19. Their work has alleviated the burden of the pandemic and saved lives. Dr. Tedros acknowledged their leadership in this field, which has the potential to improve health worldwide.
