The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its recommendations for the 2025 southern hemisphere influenza season vaccine composition.
After a 4-day meeting with experts from WHO Collaborating Centres and Essential Regulatory Laboratories, WHO advised:
- - Trivalent egg-based vaccines should contain A/Victoria/4897/2022 (H1N1), A/Croatia/10136RV/2023 (H3N2), and B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria lineage) viruses.
- - Cell culture-, recombinant protein-, or nucleic acid-based vaccines should contain A/Wisconsin/67/2022 (H1N1), A/District of Columbia/27/2023 (H3N2), and B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria lineage) viruses.
These recommendations guide national vaccine regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical companies in developing, producing, and licensing influenza vaccines.
Regular updates to vaccine composition are crucial due to constantly evolving influenza viruses.
