Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emphasized the importance of intra-Africa continental mobile money interoperability at the Africa Prosperity Network Conference in Accra. As the keynote speaker, he highlighted Ghana’s pioneering role in achieving triangular mobile money interoperability, allowing seamless transactions across telcos, bank accounts, and e-zwich platforms.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that Ghana’s successful implementation of comprehensive mobile money interoperability serves as a model for the continent. He believes that achieving continental mobile money interoperability will largely accomplish the objectives of a common currency without necessarily having one.
The Vice President proposed an incremental approach, starting with a few countries like Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire, and gradually expanding to others. He emphasized the need for digital payments convergence criteria rather than the traditional macroeconomic convergence criteria.
Dr. Bawumia’s vision for a connected Africa through mobile money interoperability has the potential to revolutionize financial transactions and promote economic growth across the continent.
